Electrometallurgy has become isolated: a new industry awaiting a breakthrough
Since August 1, electrometallurgy has gained industry independence: appropriate changes have been made to the OKVED 2 and OKPD 2 classifiers. Mashnewsfound out that industrialists and experts consider this to be the first step towards the future prosperity of this sector.
FreepikThe formalities take years.
The recognition of electrometallurgy as an independent branch of the domestic industry took about two years. The work at the expert and administrative levels was quite calm and slow. The Association of Electrometallurgical Enterprises (AEMP), established in 2022 and headed by Ivan Demchenko, a shareholder of the Novostal-M metallurgical holding, became the main slaughterer. The association now includes such notable companies as Amurstal, Petrostal and others.
The topic has been promoted in the business environment and on various platforms under the auspices of Delovaya Rossiya since 2023. She did not attract much public attention, the authorities were reluctant to comment on the issue and the prospects for its solution. In the spring of 2025, it became known that the initiators of the separation of electrometallurgy from the core industry were close to success.

- Electrometallurgy is a field of metallurgy that covers industrial methods for producing metals and alloys using electric current. The main processes are electrothermal and electrochemical. In the first case, electricity is used as a heat source to extract metals from ores and concentrates, as well as for the production, purification and alloying of various types of metals and alloys, and in the second – for the electrolysis of aqueous solutions and molten media.
In April, Mashnews reported that the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, and indeed in the industry itself, reacted cautiously to the innovation. The relevant department emphasized the lack of plans for any special and targeted state support for electrometallurgy, and some industry experts regarded the prospect of separating the industry as a kind of formality.
At the same time, AEMP does not tire of repeating that the domestic electrometallurgy is undergoing an active investment phase. Its development is strategically important for strengthening the competitiveness of the industry and the country's economy as a whole. The separation of the industry was called critically necessary for a balanced regulation of the activities of Russian electrometallurgical enterprises. On July 24, the association announced an early interim finish to this story, and it took place.
"A significant advantage of the innovation is a more accurate and transparent statistical accounting of the parameters of the electrometallurgy industry. Today, this seems to be an additional burden in the form of new reporting for enterprises, but perhaps you just need to get used to it, and the effect will appear later.
