The new complex will allow the plant to increase the output of this type of product by 20-25%, a representative of the enterprise told Vedomosti.

The project will be implemented in 2026-2027, its cost will amount to 1.6 billion rubles, said a representative of the SMZ. He explained that using the existing infrastructure made it possible to "optimize costs as much as possible compared to building from scratch." The construction site is currently being prepared at the plant.

The complex will provide additional production of flat ingots necessary for the manufacture of aluminum tape, the source explained. It will include a stationary melting furnace, an out-of-furnace metal processing unit, metal cleaning chambers, a hydraulic casting machine with an automated control system and other equipment.

The design of the new complex, the manufacture of metal structures and some types of equipment for the plant will be carried out by the Russian company NPC of Magnetic Hydrodynamics. The project involves the use of modern technologies, in particular electromagnetic mixing to accelerate the melting process and equalize the temperature of the metal inside the furnace and an automated control system.

Earlier, SMZ announced plans to build a rolling mill with a capacity of 100,000 tons per year. It is scheduled to be commissioned in 2029, and production design is underway. Investments in this project are estimated at 20 billion rubles.

The construction of the smelting and foundry complex in 2026-2027 will meet the needs of the new production facility for the production of semi-finished products, the SMZ representative explained.

The SMZ was put into operation in 1960. In 1998, the company was acquired by Oleg Deripaska's Siberian Aluminum Company. In 2005, the plant became part of the international Alcoa company. After the separation of Alcoa in 2016, the asset was called "Arconic SMZ", became part of Arconic Corporation. In November 2022, she sold the Russian business for $230 million to Industrial Investments.

SMZ is the largest producer of aluminum semi–finished products in Russia.
