EVRAZ ZSMK has implemented intelligent control of workpieces

The distributors of the crimping workshop of the United West Siberian Metallurgical Combine (EVRAZ ZSMK), together with the Evraztechnika team, completed a project to strengthen quality control of metal cutting. This is reported by "Metal supply and sales".

The modernization increased production accuracy and provided significant savings on logistics: for example, in the first two months of pilot operation, the economic effect for the enterprise amounted to 1.3 million rubles.

"The previously used system set the cutting parameters, but did not display the actual length of the workpiece, which could differ from the set values," the material says. "In such conditions, the operator had to manually control the operation of the equipment in order not to exceed the permissible range."

To solve this problem, specialists installed four length sensors on the roller behind the drum shears. The system has already been successfully tested and shows high accuracy: now the operator sees the actual length of each workpiece in real time.

The introduction of technology has made it possible to achieve a range of improvements. The accuracy of controlling the length of workpieces within the established tolerances has significantly increased, which made it possible to increase the actual length and weight of each unit of production. As a result, we managed to optimize logistics: the same volume of metal products can now be shipped using fewer gondola cars, which directly reduced transportation costs.

"The implemented project reflects EVRAZ ZSMK's commitment to the principles of continuous improvement of production processes," the company's press service noted.
