Russia, India and Turkey, typically the biggest sellers to Europe, accounted for just 3.5% of EU steel shipments in December.
Taiwan was the EU's largest source of hot-rolled coil (HRC) imports in December for the second month in a row. Its businesses sold 56,258 tons of heavy plate to the EU, representing almost 20% of the total imports of 285,140 tons. Slightly less than half of Taiwan's total, 26,446 tons, was destined for Belgium, from where raw materials are usually transported to the Benelux countries and Germany.
In total, the EU imported 9.27 million tonnes of hot-rolled products in 2021, the highest figure on record. Russia was the largest source of imports, shipping almost 2 million tons of hot-rolled steel to the EU in 2021, most of which came from Severstal, which has a duty advantage over its peers. India was the second largest source of imports (1.37 million tons), followed by Turkey (1.32 million tons).
