Ukraine and the EU consider the production of biomethane as one of the ways to overcome gas dependence

Ukraine, with its powerful agricultural industry and gas transportation system, has the potential for biomethane production, domestic use and export. “In the current gas price environment, biomethane projects are extremely interesting,” said the head of the State Energy Efficiency of the country, Valery Bezus.

This direction is actively developing in the EU. According to the European Biogas Association, in 2020, biomethane production was already operating in twenty EU countries.

According to the oil and gas company Shell, in 2021, the production of biomethane in the world amounted to about 4.3 billion cubic meters. At the same time, more than half of the production was concentrated in European countries, where today this figure exceeds 3 billion cubic meters per year.

“It will be possible to speak seriously about entering the European market if there are significant capacities for its production and real commodity volumes that will allow us to assume obligations under export contracts,” said the Head of the State Energy Efficiency of Ukraine Valeriy Bezus.
