To reduce emissions "ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih" has used an innovative method of repair of coke oven batteries
"ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih" has used an innovative method for repair of masonry coke oven batteries № 1-2. It is based on a ceramic surfacing of deep cracks with the subsequent injection of powdered formula for sealing fine cracks of the refractory brickwork of coke ovens. This method to reduce emissions have already practiced in Europe, but in Ukraine is used for the first time. In July at a meeting in the Office of the President, company representatives showed the project to Vladimir Zelensky and preliminary results of the experiment.
Experiment on batteries "ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih" suggested research enterprise "Mak of Ukraine". After processing several coke ovens and obtaining positive results of the metallurgical plant signed a contract with "poppy of Ukraine". In July of 2019 started repair work on the first battery. The contractor performs them with the help of a special apparatus for sealing the seams. And this can be done at any depth ovens without long-term decommissioning.
In each coke oven first make the ceramic cladding, and then is blown into the powder mixture. For processing one furnace takes 2 to 4 days. Only the first and second batteries 118 furnaces – for 59 each. At the moment, has already processed more than a third – 40 furnaces. Until the end of the year, the company plans to complete work on the first battery and next to continue to the second.
Vladislav Goncharov, Director of coke-chemical production "ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih":
- the Environmental benefits we get from seal of refractory masonry – sealing the powder mixtures of fine cracks. Due to this reduced prosody raw coke oven gas in the heating system and, consequently, reduced emissions of harmful substances.
This project relates to short-term measures, the company on the reduction of industrial load on the environment. In the summer they were invited to the President's Office. In addition to short-term measures, "ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih" also presented its five-year investment program to modernize the production worth 1.8 billion dollars.
