Installation of the first giant battery in Ukraine is being completed at Zaporizhzhya TES
DTEK has completed the installation of the first industrial energy storage system (SNE) in Ukraine with a capacity of 1 MW and a capacity of 2.25 MWh and proceeded to the stage of commissioning. This was announced by Emanuele Volpe, Director of Innovation at DTEK.
SNE is designed to accumulate, store and deliver electricity to the grid, as well as to maintain the functioning of the power system while ensuring the required quality of electricity. This is the first project of this kind in Ukraine, but ETS are already actively working all over the world - the USA, Great Britain, Australia, Canada use such systems to ensure stable quality of electricity and energy security.
“Despite the logistical difficulties caused by the pandemic, DTEK adheres to the schedule: we have already completed the installation of the battery, connected it to the grid and are now carrying out commissioning. Also, together with one of the contractors in this project, the Canadian company Sungrid, we carried out trial testing of the SNE, ”said Emanuele Volpe, DTEK's Director of Innovation.
SNE is installed in Energodar, at the site near the Zaporozhye TPP, since there is all the necessary infrastructure for connecting it to the network, as well as qualified personnel who will maintain this system.
“We are glad that DTEK is adopting the best world experience. We have been using energy storage systems in Canada for five years now. Our company has many pilot and commercial projects both in Canada and in different states of the USA. I am very pleased to be involved in the launch of the first such technology in Ukraine, ”said Jeremy Goertz, CEO of Sungrid (Canada).
According to E. Volpe, with the help of this project, DTEK will not only launch a new energy storage market in Ukraine, but will also make a great contribution to the transformation of the country's energy industry as a whole. However, for the full participation of ETS in the energy market of Ukraine, it is necessary to create a regulatory environment.
As a reminder, in July 2020, DTEK signed a contract with the American company Honeywell for the supply of a lithium-ion energy storage system with a capacity of 1 MW and a capacity of 2.25 MWh.
