Severstal processed about 4.6 million tonnes of blast furnace slag using a patented environmentally friendly technology

Press Releases

Severstal, since receiving a patent for processing fire-liquid-blast furnace slag, has processed about 4.6 million tons of blast furnace slag at the Cherepovets Metallurgical Plant (CherMK, one of the largest integrated steel plants in the world, is part of the Severstal Russian Steel division) .

The technology designed to minimize hydrogen sulfide emissions from the sources of the Cherepovets Steel Plant was patented by the company in 2018. It consists in cooling the slag in a thin layer without watering. A unique special equipment in a heat-resistant design shovels the slag into a trench layer-by-layer for several hours. This allows hot slag to be processed at temperatures up to 800 degrees Celsius. As a result, the average maximum concentration of hydrogen sulfide in the ambient air, recorded by observation post No. 1 (Zhukova, 4), for 9 months of 2020 decreased by 67% compared to 2011 (before the start of experiments to reduce water use in the framework of R&D).

“Excluding slag sprinkling with water, we have achieved concentrations at the standard level,” said Evgeny Vinogradov, CEO of Severstal Russianstal division and resource assets. - Of course, one cannot ignore the natural precipitation that affects the amount of emissions, but this is incomparable with regular irrigation, which is still practiced in the world metallurgy. I would like to note that our developments are advanced for Russia. ”
