UK will take measures to protect steel: King Charles
According to Callanish, the king's speech on Wednesday confirmed that the British government will continue to explore ways to nationalize British Steel.
"The economic security of the United Kingdom depends on world-class infrastructure," King Charles said. "My ministers will continue to take all necessary measures to protect domestic steel production," he added
This came after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced earlier this week, ahead of the King's speech, that the government would introduce legislation that would give it the authority to transfer the steel mill to state ownership, subject to a public interest review.
Starmer added that it was not possible to reach an agreement with the current owners, Jingye Company. The move was widely welcomed by industry associations and workers' unions.
The timing of the proposed law is currently unknown.
Cara Huffy, Head of Industry and Services at PwC UK, says: "Measures to protect domestic steel production and invest in large infrastructure reflect the growing recognition of industrial sectors as strategic national assets that ensure supply chain sustainability and competitiveness."
