Italian Steel Industry Association
Federacciai has expressed interest in working with ADI, Acciaierie d'Italia, former Ilva steel mills, as well as 14 member companies, according to an August 18 statement from Federacciai, potentially offering a domestic solution for what was once Europe's largest integrated steel production site. ,
,The move was made as the Italian government continues to look for new owners for the steel mill after years of production disruptions, financial difficulties, and environmental concerns.
The 14 Companies that joined Federacciai's statement of interest represent a wide range of the Italian steel industry, ranging from specialized steel mills to manufacturers of long and flat rolled carbon steel. According to a statement from Federacciai, the consortium includes the following companies: ABS Acciaierie Bertoli Safau, Acciaieria Arvedi, Acciaierie Venete, Advanced Steel Solutions (Gruppo Asonext), AFV Acciaierie Beltrame, Alfa Acciai, Italian siderate company, Duferco Travi e Profilati, Feralpi Siderurgica, Ferriera Valsabbia, Lucchini RS Holding, Marcegaglia Carbon and others. Steel, O. R. I. Martin and Rubiera special steel.
The expression of interest concerns assets that have been at the center of Italian industrial policy discussions for many years, especially since environmental concerns led to production restrictions at the Taranto plant. The plant has a nominal crude steel production capacity of about 8 million metric tons per year and has historically operated as an integrated steel mill using blast furnaces. The scale of the consortium involves combining the technical expertise and financial resources of the Italian steel industry to address the complex industrial, financial and legal situation surrounding the former Ilva plant. However, the consortium's application applies only to processing or "cold completion" operations. It does not include the "hot completion" operations in Taranto, the heart of the integrated steelmaking process, during which iron ore is converted into liquid steel, a spokesman for the Platts Association, part of S&P Global Energy, said by telephone on August 19.
The exclusion followed a July 27 court decision ordering the cessation of production of the Ilva hot phase within 90 days for environmental reasons
The former assets of Ilva have been under emergency management since February 15, 2024, when, at the request of the Italian state investment agency Invitalia and despite the opposition of the steel company Arcelormittal, which at that time was the largest shareholder of Acciaierie d'Italia, or ADI, special
