Automakers urge the US Congress to pass a law banning Chinese cars as soon as possible
The Alliance for Automotive Innovation is calling on Congress to permanently ban the import of Chinese cars, as well as related software and hardware, into the U.
S. market before lawmakers shut down this year, Reuters reports.
This group, representing leading manufacturers including GM, Ford, Toyota, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Honda and Stellantis, argues that Chinese cars receiving significant subsidies pose a threat to both industry and national security. CEO John Bozella warned that Chinese automakers are expanding their presence in the world using connected technologies capable of collecting confidential data, and called for the current restrictions to be consolidated in the form of a permanent federal law.

The Senate Commerce Committee approved the bill in July, but it has yet to be amended. The alliance also seeks to prevent the Ministry of Commerce from granting individual exemptions to companies such as BYD, Chery and SAIC.
