JSC "Uralelectromed" (metallurgical complex of UMMC) has launched into operation a pilot area for the production of antimony vintage SU-1 and SU-2. Received the first batch of ingots, which will soon be shipped to the consumer.
- Development of technologies for the production of fine antimony – one of the most promising projects of JSC "Uralelectromed". Primarily, it is dictated by the necessity of complex processing of raw materials and secondary products production. The raw material for a new product serve as antimony slags of the branch "Manufacture of non-ferrous metals", which are formed during the processing of lead cakes. Thus, involving the waste products in the technology, we solve at least three urgent tasks. First, a manufactured product of high purity and readiness. Second, we derive a portion of impurities from copper and lead production. Third, reduce the environmental burden on the environment, - said the chief engineer Alexei Korolev.
the Idea to start production of the pure (without additives) of products did not arise in a vacuum. The company already produces antimony and tin concentrate (rough antimony) with a content of from 94 to 98%. Thus, the obtaining of fine antimony – containing 99% - was a logical continuation of the initiated.
For the project on the basis of chemical-metallurgical workshop organized by the pilot area. Research center experts suggested that the relevant technology was tested in laboratory and semiindustrial conditions. Then, on the basis of the obtained results was developed the technological regulations, and the engineers control the design works thought out the hardware layout of the equipment.
the experimental site was equipped with a rotary crucible furnace, vibrating screen, crushing plant, and gas treatment complex. Here for refining will be supplied rough antimony. In one eight-hour operation the furnace can be melted at a temperature of 800-900 degrees to 200 kg of semi-finished product. The company plans to obtain up to 185 tonnes of antimony a year.
reference: Antimony is a semimetal in demand, which is part of the nearly 200 alloys. The addition of antimony alloy increases its hardness. Such alloys are used for the manufacture of products of machine-building, light and chemical industries: bearings, semiconductors, batteries, pipes for pumping corrosive liquids, etc.
