MMK produces 650 millionth ton of pig iron
Congratulating the staff of the blast-furnace shop on conquering this milestone, the General Director of PJSC MMK Pavel Shilyaev noted that such a significant achievement is the common merit of several generations of Magnitogorsk blast furnace workers who created the plant's glory in the years of the first five-year plans, in a harsh wartime, sparing no effort, metal and launched the largest blast furnaces in Europe, worked for the good of the country in peacetime, and today by their labor make MMK's blast furnace one of the largest and most efficient in the Russian metallurgical industry. The first blast furnace of Magnitogorsk was commissioned on February 1, 1932, since then this date is the birthday of the Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works. Today, the blast-furnace shop of PJSC MMK, consisting of eight furnaces with an annual capacity of 10 million tons of pig iron, is one of the largest blast-furnace production facilities in the country, the stability of all other redistributions of the plant depends on its stable operation. In recent years, most of MMK's blast furnaces have been radically renewed. During the reconstruction of blast furnaces, the plant pays great attention to environmental aspects, installation of modern aspiration systems. Since 2013, major overhauls have been carried out with the reconstruction of foundry yards at blast furnaces No. 6, 9, 10 and 1. Here, closed chute systems with aspiration of the casting yards and charge feeding were organized and modern hydraulic equipment for the production of pig iron was installed. Due to this, the emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere were significantly reduced, the working conditions of the furnaces improved. In July 2020, the reconstruction of blast furnace No. 2 was completed, where, in addition to the aspiration system of the casting yard, as well as at blast furnace No. 1, the design feature of the cooling system was changed ovens. Instead of plate vertical cast-iron refrigerators in the area of the shoulders and tuyere zone, horizontal copper refrigerators were installed. A breakthrough for MMK's blast furnace production will be the construction of a new blast furnace No. 11 with a working volume of 3800 m³ and a capacity of 3.7 million tons of pig iron per year. The kiln, slated to start up in 2025, will be built using the best available technology. It will have an aspiration system for foundry yards and bunker rooms with a capacity of 2 million m³ /h and a residual dust content of 10 mg /m³. There will also be installed blast furnace gas purification and blast furnace slag granulation systems. The furnace will be equipped with a local circulating water supply cycle. A utilization steam-blowing power plant will be built, and the possibility of using pulverized coal fuel injection technology will be provided. The commissioning of a new blast furnace will make it possible to decommission three operating blast furnaces and achieve a reduction in atmospheric emissions by 6.6 thousand tons per year.
