Metalloinvest unveils environmental strategy priorities
Metalloinvest, a leading manufacturer and supplier of iron ore and hot briquetted iron in the world market, one of the regional producers of high-quality steel, presented the priorities of its environmental program at the third annual conference "Industrial ecology: a course for safety", organized by by the Vedomosti newspaper.

“This is an integral part of our business strategy based on the principles of sustainable development,” noted Yulia Shabala. - We have approved an environmental program, we are developing a climate strategy aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere and using resources carefully. The company sets itself the task of a complete transition to a closed loop water supply, improving treatment and reducing the volume of water intake. Another goal that we plan to achieve within five years is 100% recycling of technological waste. "
Yulia Shabala also noted that the environmental context and sustainable development goals are increasingly becoming the main ones for companies around the world. For Russian enterprises, in most cases, the priority is the protection of water bodies, the reduction of waste and emissions into the environment, while the main focus of foreign companies is the fight against climate change.
In assessing the results of its activities, Metalloinvest is guided by the principles of maximum information transparency and environmental risk assessment when making investment decisions.
During the conference, speakers also discussed the prospects for the development of environmentally friendly models in the country's economy, new tools for financial support for ESG projects, the impact of the pandemic on the implementation of energy efficiency projects. An important topic of the forum was international cooperation in the field of sustainable development.
The conference was attended by representatives of government authorities, leading financial institutions, professional communities and specialized expert organizations, such as the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, representatives of large companies - NLMK, Rosatom, Gazprom , Sibur and others.
In 2020, Metalloinvest approved an environmental program for a five-year period. It provides for investments in the amount of more than 21 billion rubles in a set of technological and environmental measures with a direct environmental effect at all production sites of the Company.
Metalloinvest is committed to an independent and professional assessment of sustainable development policies and practices. In 2019, the Company was assigned a “Silver” rating level by the international agency EcoVadis with a final score of 60 points, with an industry average of 43 points. In 2020, Metalloinvest received an ISS ESG rating of 'C-', once again showing an above-average performance in the metals sector. In September of this year, the Company was included in the ESG Risk Rating from Sustainalytics, one of the leading international agencies in the field of ESG. Metalloinvest was ranked 10th out of 145 companies in the industry worldwide with a final score of 31.8. Evaluation is performed on a scale from 0 to 100, where zero is optimal.
Metalloinvest attaches great importance to openness and exchange of experience in order to achieve its strategic goals of sustainable development. To this end, the Company has been publishing non-financial statements since 2009. In 2019, the Company took a high 4th place in the WWF rating of openness of mining and metallurgical companies.
