MMK continues to implement a water protection project
As a result of the project implementation, maximum isolation of the Magnitogorsk reservoir from the influence of wastewater from the metallurgical giant was achieved. To restore the biological diversity of the Ural River, the project provides for the phased stocking of the reservoir within 4 years. In November 2018, the first stage of stocking was completed - more than 200 thousand young carp were released into the Magnitogorsk reservoir. In May 2019 and September 2020, respectively, the second and third stages were carried out, during which, to restore the ecological balance of the reservoir, batches of carp, 200 thousand pieces each, were released on December 1, 2020 in order to thin out and destroy unwanted vegetation in the cooling tank stocking of young grass carp and silver carp was carried out, which will reduce the overgrowth of the reservoir and reduce water bloom. Reducing unwanted vegetation in the reservoir will improve the quality of water in the PJSC MMK's circulating water supply system, as well as increase the functional efficiency of the cooling tank. These environmental measures are carried out as part of the Program for the Conservation and Enhancement of Biodiversity in the Chelyabinsk Region. In September 2020 Pavel Shilyaev, General Director of PJSC Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works, approved the Program for the Conservation and Enhancement of Biodiversity in the Chelyabinsk Region, one of which is the restoration and development of the biodiversity of the Ural River and the Magnitogorsk Reservoir. In 2021, measures will be taken to stock the water area of the Magnitogorsk Reservoir with young grass carp and silver carp. Currently, the Ural branch of the VNIRO FGBNU is working on the "Development of recommendations for maximum permissible volumes of release of aquatic biological resources (grass carp, silver carp) into the Magnitogorsk reservoir on the Ural River".
