Severstal confirms greenhouse gas reduction target with energy strategy
Severstal, one of the world's leading vertically integrated steel and mining companies, has developed an energy efficiency strategy that will largely ensure the achievement of the company's goal of reducing the company's greenhouse gases by 3% by 2023.
According to Severstal CEO Alexander Shevelev, with the company's goal to reduce the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions by 3% by 2023 compared to the level of 2020, most of the goal has already been confirmed by the investment program. In particular, more than 50% of the goal will be ensured by the energy efficiency strategy of CherMK.
“CherMK has developed a strategy capable of providing new units not at the expense of purchased electricity, but in its own generation and optimization of consumption. At the same time, the task will be solved with the observance of the environmental component, "emphasizes Alexander Shevelev.
In the list of measures designed to increase the share of its own electricity, those that have already been included in the company's investment plan and are at different stages of implementation. Among the most significant at CherMK are technical re-equipment with modernization of turbine generator No. 7 and construction of boiler unit No. 11; modernization of GUBT-25 with replacement of the turbine and installation of GUBT behind the new blast furnace No. 3. There are four more major projects in the planning stage: modernization of turbine units TG-6 and TG -3 at CHPP-PVS, turbine units TG-1 and TG-2 at CHPP-EVS-2.
Thus, by 2023, CherMK intends to approach the goal of 95% of its own production of the total demand. At the end of 2020, it amounted to 80.9%, in 2019 - 78%.
A number of measures are also aimed at achieving the goal that optimize electricity consumption, in particular, in the pumping and compressor facilities of CherMK.
The above projects are included in the large program of re-equipment of the CherMK energy sector. At the same time, the annual power generation will increase to 5486 million kW due to the utilization of industrial gases - coke oven and blast furnace, since the operation of new generation sources is planned to be ensured by utilizing secondary energy resources.
“The total economic effect upon reaching 95 percent of its own generation will be 2 , 7 billion rubles a year. It will also give an ecological effect: greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by more than 270 thousand. t СО2 per year due to reduction of natural gas consumption, reduction of gas afterburning at a candle, reduction of purchases of third-party electricity. In particular, following the implementation of the investment program, we plan to increase the utilization of secondary gases for electricity generation by more than 20%. Moreover, with the company's goal to reduce the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions by 3% by 2023 compared to the level of 2020, the reduction of pollutant emissions will be up to 12 000 tons per year. Thus, the project to increase electricity generation through the use of secondary resources, the growth of electricity generation is in line with three of the 17 UN sustainable development goals, which we have pledged to adhere to by joining the Organization's Global Compact, namely, “inexpensive and clean energy”, “responsible consumption ", - Alexander Shevelev comments.
Help:
At CherMK in 2020 and 2021. received the first products at new units - blast furnace No. 3 and the first block of the coke oven battery complex No. 11. In the near future, steel-arc furnace No. 1 will be put into operation. Additional capacities require an increase in the volume of electricity. The company's energy efficiency strategy will meet this need, while the work of new sources of generation is planned to be provided through the utilization of secondary energy resources.
