Metalloinvest announced the main goals of the Climate Strategy at the MGIMO.GREEN Forum
Metalloinvest shared the main goals of its Climate Strategy at the MGIMO.GREEN forum “Sustainable Development: International Experience, National Regulation, Corporate Practice”. The forum was organized by the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO).
“For the enterprises of the mining and metallurgical industry, the climate agenda is in many respects decisive today. Metalloinvest has completed the development of a strategy in this area. It complies with the Paris climate agreement, - said Yuri Gavrilov, director of strategy, mergers and acquisitions of Metalloinvest. - According to the Climate Strategy, the Company sets itself as a long-term benchmark to achieve carbon neutrality and the maximum reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from its consumers by 2050. This is an ambitious goal, but Metalloinvest is already the leader in terms of average emissions per 1 ton of steel, and has, perhaps, the best prospects for achieving it among all Russian metallurgical companies in the industry. "
By completing the already planned and ongoing projects to modernize the production of enterprises belonging to Metalloinvest, the Company plans to reduce its own CO2-equivalent emissions by 6% by 2025. In 15 years, the volume of emissions should be reduced by 77%. The key aspect to achieve this indicator is the introduction of technologies for the use of "green" hydrogen in the metallization process. A significant contribution will be made through the transition from blast furnace production to metallization and electric arc furnace production, as well as the use of renewable and low-carbon energy.
Yuri Gavrilov stressed that experts define sustainable development as the desire to meet the needs of today's generation without harming future generations. For itself, Metalloinvest divides the entire range of interrelated tasks in this area into economic, social and environmental agendas, according to which the Company has been conducting specific daily work for several years now.
The first MGIMO.GREEN forum "Sustainable Development: International Experience, National Regulation, Corporate Practice" brought together leading experts and specialists to exchange the best international practices of conducting "responsible" business. The main goal of the conference is to organize a public discussion with the invitation of professional participants in the implementation of state policy of ESG initiatives and to integrate the topic into the sphere of scientific, applied and educational programs at MGIMO.
The Forum was opened by the speeches of the MGIMO Rector A.V. Torkunov, Special Representative of the President of Russia for Relations with International Organizations to Achieve Sustainable Development Goals A.B. Chubais, Director of the World Wildlife Fund in Russia D.Yu. Gorshkov and Director, Resident Representative of the World Bank in the Russian Federation R. Seligmann.
Heads of international organizations, Russian ministries and departments, large companies and business associations such as NLMK Group, Sberbank, Felder Group Russia, KSTEC and others became active participants in the discussion.
