Representatives of PJSC MMK spoke about the company's achievements in the field of sustainable development at the 18th Metallurgical Summit

Sustainable development was the focus of MMK's speeches this year. Grigory Shchurov, director of labor protection, industrial safety and ecology, noted in his report that MMK in 2020 reduced gross emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere by 19.6 thousand tons due to the effect of the launch of sinter plant No. 5 and the shutdown outdated sinter plant No. 4, construction of an aspiration system for the foundry yard of blast furnace No. 2 and dust suppression systems in the sinter batch preparation shop and coal preparation shop. In addition, in 2020, MMK ensured zero discharges to the Magnitogorsk reservoir by switching to a closed water recycling system.

As explained by Grigory Shchurov, these achievements are part of MMK's planned movement towards the implementation of the Clean City initiative, declared in the Company's Development Strategy until 2025 and aimed at drastically reducing its environmental impact. “Among the further projects that contribute to the achievement of MMK's goals is the construction of a complex for a new coke oven battery No. 12 and a new blast furnace No. 11, equipped with the most modern environmental facilities. Their launch will make it possible to decommission obsolete units and reduce the volume of emissions into the atmosphere by 11.3 and 6.6 thousand tons per year, respectively, ”explained Shchurov.

In addition to reducing the total volume of emissions, the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions is of great importance for MMK. “Reducing the carbon footprint is now a common development trend for all socially responsible companies, which, of course, includes MMK,” said Grigory Shchurov. He said that the company, as part of the Development Strategy until 2025, will analyze and, if there is a significant effect on reducing CO2, plans to implement a number of best practices of global metallurgical companies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions: an intelligent system for adjusting blast furnace operating modes, dry quenching with the generation of steam and electricity from the heat of gas, preheating of slabs and scrap, the use of CO as fuel from the exhaust gases of the furnaces of the electric steel-making and oxygen-converter shops, the use of a compressorless utilization station “We carefully analyze the experience of our colleagues, including foreign ones, and we see that these measures are used by the most advanced companies in the industry, and they have proven their effectiveness. The implementation of these practices at PJSC MMK will reduce CO2 emissions by more than 1 million tons, ”summed up Grigory Shchurov.

Yaroslava Vrubel, Head of the Sustainable Development Department of PJSC MMK, in her speech also paid great attention to the environmental activities of MMK, which is one of the main components of sustainable business development. “In terms of the climate agenda, MMK took an active position in 2020. For the first time, we have assessed the risks associated with global climate change, performed a quantitative assessment and verification of direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions for our main production site in Magnitogorsk, ”noted Yaroslava Vrubel. MMK plans to reduce CO2 emissions by 2.2 million tons by 2025. In addition to ensuring low-carbon and environmentally friendly production, initiatives such as achieving the Zero Injury goal and developing a corporate culture of opportunity are important for MMK's sustainable development.

Last year, the coronavirus pandemic made its own specificity in social investments - as Yaroslava Vrubel emphasized, “undoubtedly, the main focus of our efforts in 2020 was ensuring the safety and health of people and providing support to local communities in a pandemic. The Group allocated more than $ 6.9 million to implement measures to control the incidence in 2020 ”. In addition, in 2020, MMK successfully updated its Development Strategy until 2025, its activities were highly appreciated by independent experts (in particular, in the WWF Russia rating, the company entered the top 10 among metallurgists in terms of the level of openness in the field of environmental responsibility), and already this year, the company released an integrated annual report prepared in accordance with the international Sustainability Reporting Standards of the Global Reporting Initiative. “Despite the market volatility under the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic, we remain committed to realizing our social and environmental goals, which will always remain part of our strategy,” concluded Yaroslava Vrubel.

In 2021, the annual Metallurgical Summit was held in the Volgograd region (Volzhsky), at the site of the Volzhsky pipe plant of the TMK company. As before, the event was organized by Metals of Eurasia with the support of the Russian Steel Association, with the participation of executives, top managers and leading specialists of the largest Russian metallurgical companies. Traditionally, the summit discussed key issues of the state of affairs in the industry, the state of the metal products market
