The CEO of Metalloinvest Nazim Efendiev took part in discussions on decarbonization of the industry and presented the Company's strategy to achieve carbon neutrality.
The Company's climate strategy envisages the reduction of its own direct emissions (scope 1) and indirect energy emissions (scope 2) by 6% by 2025 compared to 2019, by 77% by 2035 and by 100% by 2050.
Today Metalloinvest is a leading manufacturer of direct reduced and hot briquetted iron (DRI /HBI ), the use of which reduces direct emissions of greenhouse gases in steelmaking by 60% in comparison with traditional technological production. blast furnace - converter.
The company initially relied on direct iron reduction, which is now becoming the leading green trend in metallurgy, Nazim Efendiev emphasized.
Metalloinvest continues to develop these technologies and is considering the possibility of reconstruction of Ural Steel - the only enterprise of the Company, where there is a coke-and-blast furnace processing. In the future, a direct iron reduction module may be built here.
The next step towards decarbonization is the introduction of hydrogen into production processes. Together with leading Russian and international companies, Metalloinvest is evaluating possible technologies for the production of pure hydrogen and its use replacing the consumption of natural gas.
Already today, the Company is able to use up to 30% hydrogen as a reducing gas in existing metallization plants.
The new Mikhailovsky HBI plant (created by the USM group and Metalloinvest), which will be launched in 2024, is designed with the prospect of a complete transition to the use of hydrogen.
