The UMMC Sambo Club was granted the right to host the European Sambo Championship 2020
The UMMC Sambo Club (Verkhnyaya Pyshma) has been given the right to host the European Sambo Championship, which will be held from May 21 to May 25, 2020 in Yekaterinburg, at the Palace of Team Sports. A corresponding agreement was signed the day before between the club and the European Sambo Federation (ESF).
- There is a lot of work to be done. The ESF has shown us great confidence, so we will make every effort to ensure that the championship is held at the highest organizational level, - said the General Director of the UMMC Sambo Club, Honored Coach of Russia Valery Stennikov.
The European Championship will become the largest sambo tournament, which ever hosted by the Ural capital. Earlier, in 2003 and 2017, the city hosted the Russian championship. Twice more, in 2006 and 2014, the neighboring Verkhnyaya Pyshma became the host of the main national tournament.
As previously reported, the decision to hold EURO 2020 in Yekaterinburg was made in May of this year at the ESF congress in Spanish Gijon. In many ways, the choice was due to the positions that the UMMC Sambo Club occupies in the European and world arena. Over the past twenty years, UMMC athletes have won the title of world champions 15 times, 11 times at European championships. At the last of them, in Spanish Gijon in May this year, Vladimir Gladkikh (up to 57 kg) won his second title in his career, and Evgeny Eremin (up to 52 kg) won a silver medal.
