The world's largest producer of raw steel also has its assets in Poland - ArcelorMittal, uniting about 70% of the national production potential, which includes branches in Dąbrowa Górnica, Chorzów, Sosnowiec, Świętochłowice, Zdzieszowice and Krakow. Two years ago, the concern decided to temporarily close the raw materials part of the Krakow branch. The blast furnace was scheduled to restart in the second half of March 2020, but was initially delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the company announcing its final shutdown in October. Thus, Poland irreversibly lost 2 million tons of production capacity. To compensate for organizational losses, the company invested in the Krakow processing unit, modernizing the pickling line in the cold rolling mill.
As of 2024, the Polish metallurgical industry employs 19,498 people. The market size of the metallurgical industry in Poland, measured by revenue, will amount to 10.0 billion euros in 2024.
