Import substitution of cast bushings in special equipment: replacement criteria

Import substitution of cast bushings and bearings in special equipment: what is being replaced, according to what criteria, and how much does it cost

After 2022, enterprises operating imported mining, tractor and railway equipment are faced with the cessation of supplies of spare parts from Caterpillar, Komatsu, Liebherr, John Deere, Sandvik, Metso and other Western manufacturers. Cast parts — sliding bushings, support bearings, hydraulic cylinder liners — turned out to be among the most critical items: their resource is limited, and the original nomenclature is often unavailable even through parallel import. We look at what Russian foundries are replacing and how, what technical criteria are used to select an analog, and what is the economy of transition.

What exactly stopped being supplied

The list of critical positions for which there was a shortage in 2024-2026, according to the expert assessment of industry suppliers, includes:

  • support and pivot bushings of BelAZ-Komatsu dump trucks, diesel-electric locomotives and heavy-duty chassis;
  • bronze inserts for boom hydraulic cylinders, handles and buckets of Caterpillar, Liebherr, Hitachi excavators;
  • bushings of balancers and support rollers of tracked and wheeled special equipment;
  • motor-axial bearings of locomotives and truck support units;
  • inserts of turbine supports and pumping groups for the energy and oil and gas sector;
  • details of crushing and grinding equipment - KSD/KMD cone crushers, ball mills, Sandvik and Metso roller crushers.

The peculiarity of the situation is that the original nomenclature is often marked with Western standards of materials (CuSn10, CuAl10Fe5Ni5, CuPb10Sn10), and structurally contains specific elements — oil pockets, ring grooves, sides — without reproducing which the part will not work. Russian factories that have mastered centrifugal casting of bronze and coquille casting, such as the Detalcont foundry, are in most cases able to reproduce the original according to the provided drawing or sample while preserving all functional features.

Technical criteria for replacement: which must match the original

The correct replacement of a cast part is not only a material science task, but also a geometric one. The supplier submitting the drawing must ensure that the following parameters are included in the technical requirements:

ParameterType value for special equipment bushings Outer diameter Fit7/P6 or H8/u7 — body tension Inner diameter Fit8/h7 or H9/d9 — shaft clearance Dimensional tolerance±0.02–0.05 mm for precision assemblies Working surface roughness 0.8–1.6 microns Material hardness 80-120 depending on the grade of bronze Compliance GOSTGOST 24832-81, GOST 21488-97, GOST 613-79
