ENG HOT — error on the refrigerated Carrier

ENG HOT (Engine Hot) on the Carrier refrigerator means that the diesel engine of the installation is overheating: the temperature of the coolant has exceeded the permissible limit. This is an emergency alarm that appears on Carrier Transicold diesel installations (for example, Supra, Vector, X4 series) and on jansets, and is usually accompanied by stopping the engine to protect it. The first thing to check is the coolant level, belt tension, and radiator cleanliness.

How to view and reset the eng hot error on the karier refrigerator directly on the controller is described in a separate code guide.

What does ENG HOT mean?

The controller monitors the temperature of the engine coolant. When it goes beyond the set threshold, an ENG HOT alarm is triggered and protection is activated: the unit reduces the engine speed or stops the engine to prevent jamming and serious damage. There is no engine on container electric refs, so ENG HOT refers specifically to diesel installations and jens that supply refs autonomously.

Causes of engine overheating

The causes of ENG HOT are listed from the most common to the more rare — it is logical to diagnose in this order.

  • Low coolant level due to leakage or evaporation.
  • A dirty radiator or condenser: leaves, dust, dirt block the air flow.
  • The fan and water pump drive belts are loose or torn.
  • A faulty thermostat jammed in the closed position.
  • Water pump failure — the liquid circulation stops.
  • A faulty cooling fan or its drive.
  • Drying of the cooling system after refilling.
  • Malfunction of the temperature sensor (false alarm).

Step-by-step diagnosis

  1. Allow the engine to cool down — do not turn the cooling system on hot.
  2. Check the coolant level in the expansion tank and radiator.
  3. Inspect the radiator and grille for contamination, and clean it of debris and dust.
  4. Check the condition and tension of the drive belt.
  5. Make sure that the cooling fan rotates when the engine is running.
  6. Inspect the system for traces of antifreeze leakage (hoses, pipes, radiator).
  7. If the level and airflow are normal, suspect a thermostat, pump, or sensor.

How to eliminate and reset

If the reason is simple — refilling the coolant to normal and cleaning the radiator — after the engine cools down, the alarm is reset by switching the START/RUN switch to the OFF position and back to RUN. If the system is drained after refilling, you need to vent the air according to the instructions. If ENG HOT reappears, operation is stopped: further attempts to start with overheating lead to engine failure.
