Global crude steel production for the 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (Worldsteel) was 174.4 million tonnes in May 2021, up 16.5% from May 2020.
Steel production in Africa in May increased by 65.1% year-on-year to 1.3 million tons.
Asia and Oceania produced 128.4 million tonnes of steel, 11.7% more than in May 2020.
In the CIS, steel production amounted to 9.1 million tons, an increase of 14.8% in annual comparison.
The EU (27) produced 13.5 million tons of steel, an increase of 32.7% compared to May last year.
In Europe and other countries, 4.2 million tons of steel were produced, which is 36.9% more than in May 2020.
In the Middle East, 3.7 million tons of steel were smelted, increasing production by 16.8%.
North America produced 10.1 million tonnes of steel, up 47.7% from a year earlier.
South America produced 3.9 million tonnes, increasing production by 49.7% YoY.

- China produced 99.5 million tonnes in May 2021, up 6.6% over May 2020.
- India produced 9.2 million tons, up 46.9% from last year.
- Japan produced 8.4 million tons of steel, increasing production by 42.2%.
- The United States produced 7.2 million tonnes, up 47.6% from May 2020.
- Russia produced 6.6 million tons of steel, an increase of 14.0%.
- South Korea produced 6.0 million tons of steel, which is 10.5% more than in May last year.
- Germany produced 3.5 million tonnes of steel, up 35.5% YoY.
- Turkey produced 3.2 million tons of steel, increasing production by 42.4%.
- Brazil produced 3.2 million tonnes of steel, 40.1% more than in May 2020.
- Iran produced 2.6 million tonnes of steel, up 7.7% YoY.
