Steel production declines in India
India produced 9.18 million tons of steel in January, down 1.9 percent from 9.35 million tons in the corresponding month of 2018. In February 2019, a slight increase of 2.3 percent to 8.74 million tons was reported, compared with 8.54 million tons a year earlier. However, already in March, production fell by one percent to 9.41 million tons from 9.50 million tons in March 2018.
In 2018, the annual production of crude steel in India amounted to 106.5 million tons, or 4.9 percent more than the 101.5 million tons produced in 2017.
India is the second largest steel producer in the world after China, and in 2017 set an ambitious goal of expanding steel production to 300 million tons by 2030–31.
The World Steel Association is one of the largest industry associations in the world. Its members represent about 85 percent of global steel production, including more than 160 steel producers, nine of the top 10 steel companies, a number of national and regional associations, and research institutes.
