Tesla faces EU skepticism about Autonomous Driving Technology

Elon Musk expressed confidence that the system of "full autonomous driving (under supervision)" (Full Self — Driving (Supervised)) Tesla will soon receive EU approval after the Dutch regulator RDW approved the technology in April and began seeking wider recognition in the EU, Reuters reports. A key EU committee will consider the Dutch case, although a vote is not expected this week; approval requires the support of member states representing 55% of countries and 65% of the EU population, with further meetings scheduled for July and October.

Tesla considers FSD approval in Europe important for regaining market share after a 27% drop in sales in 2025 and predicts EU-wide approval in the second or third quarter. However, regulators in the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Norway have expressed concerns about safety and consumer understanding. Among the issues are the FSD's ability to exceed the speed limit, its use on icy roads in Northern Europe, the reaction to moose, the ability of drivers to circumvent protective measures against phone use, and whether the name "Full Self-Driving" might mislead consumers. Some regulators praised the system's performance in difficult traffic conditions in Copenhagen and Paris, while others said additional documentation was needed. The Dutch authorities have not released detailed data, noting only that FSD has been thoroughly tested.
