European prices for stainless steel coils are declining

The European stainless steel sheet metal market is going through a difficult period characterized by slow order arrivals and a downward trend in prices for rolled steel, according to stainless steel processors and service centers.

Several factories in Europe lowered their supply prices in May by about 20-30 euros per ton ($22-34), while the volume of orders remains under pressure. The stainless steel manufacturer is reportedly conducting a gradual weekly price reduction, and this trend is expected to continue. The increase in roll prices in March did not bring the desired results, as buyers, faced with market uncertainty and declining demand, decided to reduce purchases, Kallanish notes.

The roll supply exceeds the demand in Europe. According to one source, there was a balance of supply and demand last year, as both Acerinox and Outokumpu suspended production due to social unrest.

The service center in Italy reports that its customers show minimal buying activity and continue to make transactions in small volumes, often at a low price. a consistent framework. Service centers also purchase a limited amount of equipment to eliminate inventory shortages.

Many refiners indicate that sales volumes in the first quarter are in line with those in the first quarter of 2024; however, margins are under pressure and in some cases falling below cost. Attempts to raise prices for rolled products have encountered difficulties, as prices remain mostly stable in the range of 2550-2620 euros per ton from the plant, depending on volumes and customer requirements.

In April and May, prices are expected to decrease due to the Easter holidays and numerous bank holidays in May, especially in France. The service center in Northern Europe confirms that the market is developing slowly in Italy, France and Germany, and there is no inclination to risk or speculate. The company focuses on diversification, trying to avoid the production of commodities where competition is high and prices are under pressure.

European factories are offering 2,450 euros per ton of cold-rolled stainless steel roll for delivery in May, including shipping costs. Prices for hot-rolled coils are lower by 130-150 euros per ton, depending on the volume.

Prices for stainless steel products in Italy remain low and are about 50 euros per ton lower than in the European market as a whole. CRC prices in Italy are 2380-2400 euros per ton with delivery. The price of steel in Europe is approximately 2,170-2,200 euros per ton of products supplied.

According to the April market survey by the Italian steel manufacturers association Assofermet, demand
