Fire halted operation of Marcegaglia railway line for ‘several weeks’

The Italian company Marcegaglia plans to resume cold rolling production at its Ravenna plant within a few weeks after the fire at the plant, a McCloskey company representative said on November 3.

Market participants reported that the fire occurred in late October.

"The fire, which affected one of the three cold rolling workshops at the Ravenna plant, was quickly extinguished without human intervention. The restoration plan for the plant was immediately launched and is expected to be completed within a few weeks," said a Marcegaglia representative. "Industrial and commercial agreements were also promptly launched to minimize the impact on supplies, including in the short term."

Italian buyers expressed concerns that the incident would lead to a reduction in supplies and higher prices for cold-rolled coils (CRC).

The weekly indicator of domestic CRC prices from McCloskey increased by 15 euros per ton week-on-week and by 30 euros per ton month-on-month and amounted to 695 euros per ton at the plant in Northwestern Europe on October 31.

The introduction of the Carbon Dioxide Emissions Control Mechanism (CBAM) from January 2026 has already led to an increase in prices for imported rolls. At the same time, the proposed stricter import quotas, which are expected to take effect in the first half of next year, have led to a reduction in the proposed volume of CRC shipments abroad.

.

As a result, European buyers are increasingly relying on domestic supplies. However, European steel producers are reluctant to sell CRC, preferring either higher value-added products such as hot-dip galvanized roll (HDG) or less expensive finished products such as hot-rolled roll (HRC).

According to sources, even a slight decrease in CRC availability can have a noticeable impact on the market.
