Romania strives for stable prices by restricting import trade due to high prices in the EU

The Romanian long products market has remained virtually unchanged over the past week amid continued weak demand and ongoing liquidity problems. Trading activity continues to be low, and most buyers are taking a cautious approach due to limited demand in the secondary market and uncertain economic conditions. As a result, the supply of rebar and wire rod in the domestic market remained at the same level, as both local spot traders and the country's only manufacturer of rebar decided to keep prices stable amid weak customer interest. Meanwhile, in the import segment, consumer activity has noticeably decreased, despite the fact that several small and medium-sized deals have been concluded with EU suppliers in recent weeks. Market participants report that Romanian buyers now consider offers of European origin to be relatively high, which makes them less attractive compared to domestic alternatives. Combined with a lack of liquidity and limited construction activity, this perception has further reduced import demand.

In the domestic market, prices for rebar remained unchanged, while the only manufacturer in the country maintained supply at 550-555 euros per ton from the factory. Spot traders also kept prices stable at 555-565 euros per tonne from the warehouse, as they were last week. However, in the spot market, some traders continue to offer small discounts to stimulate sales, with prices from the warehouse being around 540-545 euros per ton, as weak liquidity and low demand continue to limit activity.

Similarly, the wire rod market has a similar stability with minimal trading volumes. Last week, the supply remained stable at the level of 560-570 euros per ton from the warehouse.

On the other hand, in the import market, Romanian buyers are not very satisfied with the prices of EU suppliers. However, those who urgently need materials and who are still waiting for customs clearance procedures with suppliers from non-EU countries had to purchase some shipments from EU suppliers. According to sources, Romanian buyers have recently purchased small and medium-sized batches of fittings in Bulgaria and Italy at a price of about 570-580 euros per ton excluding VAT and 585-595 euros per ton excluding VAT, respectively. Meanwhile, last week new offers from Bulgaria and Italy with deliveries at the end of November continued to remain at the same level. Similarly, rebar offers from Moldovan suppliers also remained stable at around 550 euros per ton, excluding VAT. As for suppliers
