Tata Steel Nederland has taken an important step towards implementing its long-term decarbonization strategy by signing a definitive agreement to acquire three Vattenfall power plants in the Eymond region of the Netherlands. The assets currently operating on residual steelmaking gases will be transferred to Tata Steel Nederland on January 1, 2026.
Although the financial details of the agreement were not disclosed, the transfer has received full approval from relevant authorities, including the Dutch Consumer and Markets Authority (ACM).
Strategic acquisition to support low carbon steel production
Hans van den Berg, CEO of Tata Steel Nederland, described the transfer of ownership as an important step in the implementation of the company's plan to green steel production. Direct ownership of the power units will allow the company to organize a controlled transition from traditional steelmaking to more environmentally friendly production.
The Vattenfall power plants in the Ijmond region consist of three power units. Power plants No. 24 and 25 in Velsen — Nord generate electricity mainly from residual gases produced during steel smelting, and this electricity is used by Tate Steel Nederland in its production activities. The third power unit, IJmond 01, is a combined heat and power plant located at the Tata Steel plant in Ijmuiden. It also runs on gases generated during steel production and produces both electricity and steam, which are used in the technological processes of steel production.
