Swedish factories recorded a significant decrease in steel production in September and October compared to the corresponding months of the previous year.

In September, Sweden produced 273,000 tons of steel, which is 11% less than in September 2024, Kallanish reports, citing data from the national association of steel manufacturers Jernkontoret. From January to September, Sweden produced a total of 3.03 million tons of steel, which is 0.5% less than in the same period last year.

. However, in the third quarter alone, production increased by 4% compared to the same period last year. According to Jernkontoret, production fluctuated significantly during the summer months due to several shutdowns for maintenance and other repairs. This led to a strange offsetting effect in August, which showed a 53% year-on-year increase.

"After a weak first half of the year, we see positive results in the third quarter. Annual production remains close to last year's level, although slightly lower," said Mathias Turnell, Director of Trade Policy at Jernkontoret.

However, the downward trend that began in September continued in October. The production volume was 282,000 tons, which is 8.5% less than last year. "Production shutdowns for maintenance and other reasons continued in October, resulting in a weak start to the third quarter. The annual rate remains slightly lower than last year," concludes Turnell, which means a decrease of 1.2% in the first ten months.
