Global steel production in April totaled 155.7 million tons, down 0.3% from the same period last year, according to data from the World Steel Manufacturers Association released on May 22.

As a result, production in January-April amounted to 624.4 million tons, which is slightly lower by 0.4% year-on-year.

In April, China produced 86 million tons of crude steel, which is 55.2% more than in the previous year from the total global crude steel production, while production in January-April increased by 0.4% to 345.4 million tons.

In India, the world's second-largest steel producer, production rose 5.6% to 12.9 million tons in April, followed by data showing Japan's output was 6.6 million tons, down 6.4% from the same period last year.

In January-April, India produced 53.2 million tons, and Japan - 27 million tons, which is 6.9% more and 5.3% less, respectively, year-on-year.

Production in the United States in April decreased by 0.3% year-on-year to 6.6 million tons, while the total volume for four months was 26.4 million tons, unchanged from the previous year.

In April, Russia produced an estimated 5.8 million tons, down 5.1% from April 2024, while South Korea produced 5 million tons, down 2.5% from the same period. Their volumes decreased by 4.5% and 3.4% in four months, amounting to 23.4 million tons and 20.5 million tons, respectively.

Turkey production in April increased by 7% year-on-year to 3 million tons compared to January-April, a decrease of 1% to 12.3 million tons.

According to the data, in Germany, the largest steel producer in Europe, crude steel production decreased by 10.1% year-on-year to 3 million tons, bringing the total volume for four months to 11.4 million tons, which is 11.9% less compared to the same period last year.

According to the data, steel production in the EU decreased by 2.6% year-on-year to 11.1 million tons, while production in January-April amounted to 43.5 million tons, which is 2.4% less over the same period.

The Platts agency, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, estimated domestic commodity prices in Northern Europe on May 21 at 630 euros per ton, excluding production in the Ruhr, which is 12.5% higher since the beginning of 2025.

Crude steel production in Brazil also decreased by 3.1% year-on-year to 2.6 million tons in April, while in Iran it increased by 4.6% to 3.3 million tons. Their volumes in January-April amounted to 11 million tons and 10.6 million tons, respectively, which is 0.3% and 8% less than a year earlier.
