ArcelorMittal in Belgium has announced the official start of construction of its high-voltage substation in Beukeland, which is an important step towards the production of electric energy and low-carbon steel.

The installation is designed to receive electricity through high-voltage cables and overhead lines and convert it into a voltage suitable for large industrial consumers. After commissioning, it will become a key node of the Belgian electricity grid, enhancing the energy supply to the port area and surrounding industrial facilities.

A key role in the transformation of Belgium's energy sector

The Baekeland substation is expected to play a central role in ensuring the transition to regional energy. Starting in 2030, ArcelorMittal Belgium will become the first company directly connected to the high-voltage grid.

For ArcelorMittal Belgium, this project is an essential element of the decarbonization strategy. The planned transition to electric steelmaking, including future operations with electric arc furnaces (EDP), requires significantly higher amounts of electricity than those that can be obtained through the company's existing 150 kV connection.

To eliminate this limitation, ArcelorMittal Belgium has signed an agreement with the Belgian system operator Elia to provide access to a 380 kV high-voltage network. This new connection will provide the power needed to operate electric steelmaking plants and reduce the carbon intensity of steel production.

Construction work is currently underway and it is planned that the Baekeland high-voltage substation will be commissioned in 2030 in accordance with ArcelorMittal Belgium's long-term plan to produce low-emission electric steel.
