Mannesmann supplies pipes for Germany's hydrogen grid

German gas pipeline network operator ONTRAS Gastransport has signed major contracts with two companies belonging to the Salzgitter group, Kallanish reports.

Mannesmann Grossrohr (MGR) will supply 70.6 km (about 18,000 tons) of pipelines, while Mannesmann Line Pipe (MLP) will supply another 38.2 km (6,000 tons).

These are pipelines intended for the new FGL 702 project, the H2 pipeline running from Wefensleben to Salzgitter and extending from Angersdorf near Leipzig to Preislitz.

"For the company's decarbonization program, known as SALCOS – Salzgitter low-CO2 steel production, connecting to a network of hydrogen power plants is of great importance," says Andreas Betzler, CEO of the two Salzgitter companies. "The Salzgitter Group is not only a potentially large customer that needs hydrogen, but providing its steel products means that it also allows for the production of hydrogen and its supply to consumers," he says.

MGR will supply pipelines with a diameter of 813 mm. These pipelines will be coated with a three-layer polyethylene coating to minimize friction losses during gas passage, as well as an epoxy coating for interior decoration. With a length of 18 meters, the linear pipes will weigh about 4.5 tons.

Starting in February 2027, they will be delivered by trucks to warehouses located just 37 km from the rolling mill.

The diameter of the MLP pipes, also 18 m long, is 610 mm and will also be varnished.
