Tuflesa, a Spanish manufacturer of welded steel pipes, part of the Bornay Group of companies, has commissioned the German equipment manufacturer SMS Group to modernize the calibration section of its ERW-RD-240 pipe welding line at the Las Torres de Cotillas plant near Murcia.
New calibration stands for improved accuracy and productivity
As part of the project, SMS Group will replace four worn-out calibration stands and their associated replacement equipment, while retaining the existing main drive, base frames, and automatic stand changers to reduce investment costs, labor, and downtime. It is expected that the new stands, which will be delivered fully assembled, with wires and pipelines, will restore dimensional accuracy, increase productivity and allow Tuflesa to produce new products in compliance with stricter tolerance requirements. ERW-RD-240 line
Supplied by SMS Group in 1998, it produces structural pipes with maximum dimensions of 240 mm for round products and 200 x 200 mm for square products, including pipe solutions for solar energy with critical tolerances.
The installation is scheduled for the summer of 2027.
Equipment replacement is planned for the planned Tuflesa summer shutdown in 2027, while SMS Group also oversees commissioning and supports subsequent production growth.
This will be the second modernization carried out by SMS Group on the line after the modernization of its molding and processing equipment. Welding of the sections will begin in 2024. The latest order included the commissioning of a new RD 40 high-frequency pipe welding line in 2021.
