Passenger car production in Italy declined last year, but it increased significantly in December 2025 and January 2026. Kallanish learned about this from the preliminary data of the Automobile Association (Anfia).
In 2025, the production of cars amounted to 237,800 units, which is 23.2% less than in the same period last year. However, in December, the Italian automobile production index reversed the negative trend of the previous three months, recording an increase of 13.5%. This is stated in a note by Anfia CEO Gianmarco Jorda. In December, car production totaled 21,600 units, an increase of 104.3% compared to the same period in 2024.
For comparison, last year in the UK there was a decrease in production by 8% compared to the same period last year to 717,400 vehicles. In Spain, production decreased by 5.7% to 1.8 million units. According to Anfia, German production increased by 2% to 4.2 million units in 2025. The latest data shows that car production in France increased by 5% in January-September compared to the same period last year and amounted to 748,700 vehicles.
"In terms of annual production volumes, as we have repeatedly stressed, 2025 was a "terrible year": car production decreased by almost 20% compared to 2024, which in itself was already difficult in terms of volume," says Giorda.
"For the current year, it is hoped that thanks to the allocation of resources by the Mimit Automotive fund[The ministry of enterprises and made in Italy]at the last automotive round table, which will also focus on supply support measures, as well as the launch of new models expected in 2026, the Mimit automotive fund will be allocated[The ministry of enterprises and made in Italy]at the latest automotive round table, which will also focus on supply support measures, domestic production volumes may recover soon," they add.
In January, the positive dynamics of production in Italy continued. Production increased again by 34.5% to 17,500 vehicles.
Spanish production in January increased by 2.8% to 136,700 vehicles, while UK and German production decreased by 8.2% to 65,200 vehicles and 9% to 305,900 vehicles, respectively.
