"Green steel" and CBAM standards are changing the face of the Turkish steel industry

As part of the Decarbonization of the Turkish Steel Industry project, coordinated by the Istanbul Policy Center, industry representatives, government agencies, researchers and participants from steel-consuming industries gathered for an Information session on the work of the Turkish steel industry Network. Program. During the meeting, topics such as the European Union's Carbon Boundary Regulation Mechanism (CBAM), definitions of low-emission steel, green steel standards, financing issues, and the process of sector transformation were discussed.

Speaking at the opening of the meeting, project coordinator Dursun Bash from the Istanbul Policy Center said that the Turkish Steel Industry Decarbonization project, which started in June 2022 and will end in June 2026, was initially targeted at crude steel producers in Turkey. Bash explained that the project involves not only crude steel producers, but also government agencies, industry associations, financial organizations, and steel-consuming sectors through joint efforts. He stressed that decarbonization of the sector is not only the responsibility of crude steel producers, and stated that this transformation should be carried out jointly with the sectors of energy, natural gas, logistics, finance, public policy and steel consumption. Noting that the level of emissions in the Turkish steel industry is not only due to the work of integrated enterprises, Bash said that installations based on electric arc furnaces also generate significant indirect emissions due to high electricity consumption. He also noted that the emissions associated with the use of natural gas, transportation and logistics are also significant.

Confirmed emissions data and financial difficulties mark a new stage.

Speaking at the meeting, Muammer Bilgic, member of the Executive Board of Bilecik Demir A.

Ş., stated that the baseline and standard emission values announced by the EU under the CBAM program correspond to the beginning of a new era for the industry. Bilgic noted that in the past, companies were evaluated based on indicators that they themselves determined, while now the basis will be verified emissions data. He stressed that companies are now considered environmentally friendly only if their performance is confirmed. Bilgic also noted that electric arc furnace-based equipment may not be as profitable as previously thought, noting that under CBAM, arc furnace-based equipment and oxygen furnace-based equipment are evaluated within their respective categories. Emphasizing that efforts to ensure
