Salzgitter Flachstahl, a subsidiary of Salzgitter AG, which manufactures tapes, and Zelestra have signed what they say is Germany's largest agreement on hybrid energy supply from solar energy and batteries (PPA).
The long-term agreement covers two projects that support the production of environmentally friendly steel and increase the flexibility of the energy system," Kallanish tells the steelmaker.
As part of the agreement, Zelestra will build, own and operate two new hybrid plants, each with directly connected battery storage systems, in Brandenburg and Thuringia. Salzgitter will purchase a total of 147 MW or 158 GWh of solar energy per year from both power plants and monitor the operation of the battery storage systems.
According to Salzgitter, this agreement is the first hybrid PPA in the German market for both partners and makes Salzgitter a battery storage system operator for the first time.
For Salzgitter Flachstahl, hybrid PPAs are an important building block in meeting the growing demand for environmentally friendly electricity to transform steel production as part of the SALCOS project.
As Germany is Zelestra's main market, the company is currently implementing more than 2 GW of projects in the fields of solar, hybrid, wind energy and data storage systems. In the country, says Salzgitter.
