Polish rebar prices converge amid weak demand and exports to Ukraine

In the week to Friday, October 23, the range of domestic rebar prices in Poland narrowed amid high production costs, weak demand and shipments to Ukraine, sources told Fastmarkets.

“There is some product shortage on the market, but demand is traditionally low,” a seller’s representative told the publication.

One market participant reported an offer from local producers at €636 ($714) per tonne CPT, equivalent to 2,780 zlotys per tonne.

Another source cited an offer price of 2,800 zlotys per tonne, while a seller’s representative reported offers at 2,840 zlotys per tonne.

At the end of the week, Fastmarkets’ assessment for rebar in the Polish domestic market, CPT, stood at 2,780–2,840 zlotys per tonne. The range had been wider the previous week, at 2,773–2,850 zlotys per tonne.

“Demand remains weak, and buyers say the ‘season is over.’ Mills are trying to raise prices, but without success,” another distributor source said.
“Large volumes of product are being shipped to Ukraine,” another market participant said.

The increase in shipments to Ukraine followed Russian strikes on Ukrainian steel mills in August and September this year, which caused critical damage to infrastructure.

According to market participants, workable prices for drawing-quality wire rod stood at 2,900–3,150 zlotys per tonne. Another source reported an offer at 3,000 zlotys per tonne.

Fastmarkets’ weekly assessment for drawing-quality wire rod delivered to the Polish domestic market fell at the low end to 2,900–3,150 zlotys per tonne. The range had been 2,950–3,150 zlotys per tonne the previous week.
