Egypt’s NSF to supply 4,500 mt of structural steel for Saarstahl plant in Germany

Egypt’s National Steel Fabrication (NSF) has received an order from German industrial equipment manufacturer SMS group to manufacture and supply 4,500 mt of structural steel for steelmaker Saarstahl’s plant in Germany.

NSF said the order is part of an industrial project at Saarstahl’s facility and will be carried out in cooperation with SMS group.

SMS group to supply new electric arc furnace to Saarstahl plant in Völklingen

As SteelOrbis previously reported, in October 2024 SMS group announced that it would supply an AC electric arc furnace and auxiliary equipment for Saarstahl’s plant in Völklingen. Saarstahl is part of Stahl-Holding Saar (SHS), which aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045.

According to SMS group, the new furnace will have a capacity of 185 mt, while the transformer will have a capacity of 300 MVA. It will be one of the most powerful electric arc furnaces in the world. The furnace will be capable of processing up to 100% scrap or a mix of 80% cold direct reduced iron (DRI) or hot briquetted iron (HBI) and 20% scrap. The first heat is planned for September 2028. The facility will produce various steel grades, including bearing, free-cutting and spring steel.
