German steelmaker Salzgitter AG said grid operator TenneT Germany has commissioned a new industrial power line in Salzgitter, in the state of Lower Saxony. It will help the company transition to low-emissions steel production under its SALCOS® (Salzgitter Low CO₂ Steelmaking) program.
According to the company, the new line will increase the capacity of the power grid serving Salzgitter’s industrial sites. This will enable further electrification of steel production and improve the reliability of the region’s power supply.
The first phase of the SALCOS® program is scheduled for completion in 2027
Heike Deneke-Arnold, CEO of Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, said the first phase of the SALCOS® program was nearing completion and should be implemented in 2027. The new production facilities, including an electric arc furnace (EAF), are expected to begin operating then. She said the new power line was essential to the program, as the transition to low-carbon steel production will significantly increase electricity demand.
Salzgitter noted that the existing 220 kV grid would not be sufficient to meet the expected long-term growth in industrial energy consumption in the region. The new infrastructure includes an approximately 10 km-long 380 kV overhead line connecting the Liedingen and Bleckenstedt-Süd substations.
