Turkey and China lead the way in reducing long-term EU rates in the second quarter
The use of the EU tariff quota for long products (TRQ) in the second quarter as of April 22 shows that the largest reduction was recorded in a limited number of countries of origin, especially Turkey and China. Callanish notes that most quotas for supplies from the UK remain largely open.
According to four key categories of long products – long products, rebars, wire rods, corners and profiles – the largest absolute quotas for wire rods belong to Great Britain, for long products to China, and for rebars and corners/profiles to Turkey.
As of April 22, the most stringent quotas were Turkish wire rod (used by 100%), Chinese rolled products (used by 90%), Turkish fittings (used by 75%) and Egyptian fittings (actually sold on a net basis by 92%). In contrast, quotas for shipments from the UK in many segments of long products remain largely open.
140,406 tons have been allocated to China for the sale of bars (category 12). However, it is also the most actively used basic quota, as only 14,570 tons remain available, which is equivalent to 10% of the initial volume. This means that the usage is about 90%. For comparison, accessibility is 97% in the UK and 73% in Turkey.%
.For the manufacture of fittings (category 13) Turkey has a quota of 94,493 tons, of which 23,711 tons remain, or 25%. Among other sources, Egypt is also actively used, and after deducting the pending allocation of resources, only 2,109 tons, or 8%, are available. Bosnia and Algeria remain virtually unused.
Wire rod (category 16) shows the strongest drawdown of all long position categories. Turkiye has completely exhausted its stock of 98,153 tons, leaving a zero balance. The UK has the largest quota at 163,136 tons, of which 90% is still available, while Switzerland retains 88%. Among other countries, Egypt has de facto exhausted its reserves, with only 53 tons of net available, while Malaysia, Bosnia, Korea and Indonesia remain virtually untouched.
In terms of corners and profiles (category 17), the UK ranks first in the distribution by country - 27,208 tons, while 99% has not yet been used. Turkey demonstrates the highest efficiency of use: 13,632 tons remained from the quota of 22,643 tons, which means that about 40% has already been consumed. Other countries, such as the United Arab Emirates, China and Korea, are showing minimal activity.
