Britain strengthens steel shield: new restrictions to protect national industry

The UK plans to impose stricter-than-expected restrictions on steel imports, thereby limiting supplies from Vietnam, South Korea and Algeria. The move is intended to protect the national steel industry from the effects of the global trade conflict and the redirection of cheap products from other regions, Reuters reports.

Despite previous recommendations from the Office of Trade Protection (TRA), Secretary of Commerce Jonathan Reynolds announced his intention to reject the proposed quotas, calling them too lenient. The TRA provided for a limit of 40% of the remaining quota for each country in three categories. However, the Government plans to reduce these figures to 20% for the category dominated by Vietnam and to 15% for the categories dominated by South Korea and Algeria. Excess volumes will be subject to a 25% duty.

According to Reynolds, the new measures are aimed at effectively protecting domestic producers while maintaining stable supplies for the British market. The changes are due to take effect on July 1, after consultations with the members of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The head of the UK Steel Association, Gareth Stace, welcomed the decision, calling it a significant success and a demonstration of government commitment to the industry. He stressed that the new rules would reduce the risk of redirecting excess steel from the US and the EU and help avoid the loss of competitiveness of British producers.

The decision is part of London's broader efforts to support the industry, including negotiations to eliminate U.

S. duties and take control of British Steel.
