Volatile nickel prices, CBAM import duties in the EU and the dynamics of the US market in the face of 50% import duties are some of the topics discussed in the new issue of the podcast "Stainless Steel Market Overview".
The 45-minute discussion examines the key factors affecting nickel production. Steel supply, demand, and prices in Europe, the United States, and Asia for early 2026 and considers how they will affect the coming year.
Tom Sharp, Editor-in-Chief of MEPS, was joined by Kay Ayub, Head of Price Analysis and Forecasts, and Michelle Kirton, Steel Market Analyst, for a discussion based on research conducted for the MEPs Stainless Steel Survey.
"I think this year's events in Europe will be largely dictated by the supply restrictions imposed by CBAM, and this summer we will replace the existing import protection measures," Ayub said. "European factories are now more confident about price increases. But in each region that the MEPs have explored, the situation will be different "
Kirton told the podcast that US import duties are supporting prices in this country. According to her, prices have increased to such an extent that importing from Asia is now an acceptable option for many buyers. However, demand remains as low in the United States as in Europe and most of Asia. Kirton said, "No one expects a surge in demand."
