The latest MEPS International podcast, "The Market in Minutes," examines the reasons why steel prices in Southern Europe continued to decline in June.

Steel market analyst Benedikte Mikolajczak joined Tom Sharp, Editor-in-Chief of MEPS, to discuss the results of her research among participants in the Italian steel market. and Spain, which featured in this month's European Steel Review[/url]. In the 12-minute edition of the podcast, which is part of[url=https://www.youtube.com/@mepsinternational/videos The podcast of MEPs "Talking about steel" also talks about the prospects for steel supply, demand and prices in the region.

Mikolajczak said that the negative impact on steel price dynamics made the business climate more and more "frightening" for stockbrokers in Southern Europe, who are suffering from declining sales and ever-shrinking profit margins. She told the podcast that strengthening trade protection measures may be the only real hope for a sustained price recovery.

"In addition to CBAM, additional protection measures are expected to be implemented as early as January 1, 2026," she said. "I think this is the only thing that can change prices, because people don't expect real demand to improve until the end of the year."

Among the topics discussed in the latest podcast of MEPs "The market in a matter of minutes" were:

  • How the downward trend in steel prices made the business climate more and more "scary" for stockbrokers in Southern Europe
  • Oversupply in the context of low demand from many steel-consuming sectors of the region.
  • The weak US dollar and how it increased competition from cheap steel imports between May and July.
  • Importers of steel from Southern Europe are currently "coping" with anti-dumping duties, protective quotas and restrictions on access to raw materials.
  • Will CBAM be able to direct steel buyers in Southern Europe to purchase steel on the domestic market, which will support prices in the second half of the year and into 2026?
