Modernization of coke production is the largest investment program of Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works in recent years. It is aimed at improving the production process of the most important raw materials for metallurgists and reducing the anthropogenic impact on the environment.

With the launch in July 2024 of the complex of high-tech coke battery (KB) No. 12 with a capacity of 2.5 million tons of dry coke per year, it became possible to decommission obsolete MMK coke production facilities.
In 2024, four coke-fired batteries No. 13, 14, 1 and 2 were sequentially shut down. Coke oven batteries No. 4 and No. 8 are currently out of operation. The launch of KB No. 12 and the subsequent shutdown of six obsolete batteries have a significant environmental effect for Magnitogorsk - emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere will be reduced by 11.3 thousand tons per year.

The actual reduction in benzapyrene concentration at the border of the sanitary protection zone has already reached 40%.A nine-fold reduction in formaldehyde has been achieved, and dust emissions have decreased by 21%.
