Ukrainian enterprises reduced the export of ferrous scrap in half

the Ukrainian ferrous metallurgy enterprises in January-may 2020 has sharply reduced the export and import of ferrous scrap. According to statistics released by the State customs service (GTS) of Ukraine on Friday, the export of scrap metal, in physical terms fell by 54.8% compared to the same period last year – up to 16,489 thousand tons, in monetary terms, exports of scrap decreased by 58.1 per cent to 4,181 million tons.

In January exported 2 865 tonnes of scrap, in February 8 014 tons, in March – 493 tonnes, in April – 256 tons, in may – 4 861 tons.

the Import of metal scrap in real terms for five months in 2020 decreased by 76.2 per cent compared to the same period last year - up to 6,841 thousand tons. In monetary terms this indicator decreased by 49.9% to 7,411 million dollars.

a Major supplier of scrap to the Ukrainian market in the reporting period were Turkey (65,46% of the supply in monetary terms), followed by Russia (26,52%) and the Netherlands (5,07%).

the Main buyer of Ukrainian metal also remains Turkey (78,41%), followed by the Netherlands (11,29%) and Germany third (7,22%).

in addition, the metallurgical enterprises of Ukraine in January-may 2020 imported from Russia 1,602 tonnes of hot briquetted iron (HBI), which is a substitute for pig iron and scrap in the amount of 481 thousand dollars, while in January-may-2019 imported from Russia and did not export these products.

As reported, Ukraine in 2019, reduced the export of scrap metal in 7.8 times compared to the 2018 year - to 42,182 thousand tons, in monetary terms exports fell nine times - up to 11,781 million dollars. Last year, the country increased its import of metal scrap in real terms by 17.2% compared to the 2018 year - to 49,934 thousand tons. In monetary terms, the imports fell 6.4% to $34,254 million
