Metinvest's Italian contractors reveal details of the investment project in Mariupol

The Metinvest Group of Rinat Akhmetov and Vadim Novinsky has launched a large-scale project for the construction of a new workshop for the production of cold-rolled steel, galvanized and painted coils at the Mariupol Ilyich Iron and Steel Works. The total investment in the project will exceed $ 1 billion. On June 10, Metinvest signed a contract for the supply of equipment with the world's leading supplier of technologies for metallurgy, the Italian company Danieli.

The complex will produce 1.6 million tonnes of quality cold-rolled strip per year, of which more than 600,000 tonnes per year will be galvanized coils and over 170,000 tonnes per annum - color-coated coils - for the domestic and European construction and automotive markets. The final sheet thickness will be reduced to 0.25 mm and the roll width will increase to 1600 mm.

The project includes the construction of a continuous tandem cold rolling mill combined with a pickling line, as well as two strip processing lines for zinc, zinc-aluminum and polymer coatings.

The mill will be fitted with Danieli OSRT profiled rolls for improved flatness correction below 5IU. Strip thickness tolerance will be ± 0.6% for custom head /tail lengths less than four meters.

On the galvanizing line, the Danieli Kohler X-Jet wiping system will perform extremely precise control of the final zinc coating thickness, up to 30 g /m 2 on each side (at a rolling speed of 150 meters per minute).

The induction technology implemented at the in-line painting section will make it possible to produce strips with a high quality polymer coating.

The new technology for the production of cold-rolled steel will allow Metinvest to enter the premium segments of coated steel - galvanized and painted coils, the latter of which is not represented in the group's product line, as well as improve the quality and expand the range of cold-rolled products.

“The technology we are implementing in Mariupol is the most advanced and environmentally friendly one on the market today. This intelligent automated facility will be one of the few in the world that combines high product quality, low manufacturing costs and low emissions, ”said Giacomo Marescchi Danieli, CEO of Danieli.

The new workshop will be equipped with highly efficient gas cleaning equipment that meets the latest environmental standards of Ukraine and Europe. Thanks to gas cleaning, emissions of harmful substances will be 1.5-3 times lower than the maximum permissible standards in Ukraine, and fuel consumption will decrease by 20%.
