How to choose the right pH meter to pay only for the features you need?

pH meters are used to measure the activity of hydrogen ions in the environment. In this way, the acidity of soil, water, food, solutions or other materials and liquids is determined. The choice of this device must be made correctly, paying attention to the functions and technical characteristics of the product.

Types of pH meters

Analyzers are conditionally divided into several types:

  • pocket (handheld) - small, easily portable devices. These pH meters are ideal for determining soil acidity. They are also used to analyze the pH of water or solutions. Particularly popular in the field of horticulture and agronomy, indispensable for controlling the acidity of water in pools.
  • portable —have somewhat large dimensions; ergonomic accessories used both in laboratories and in the field. These devices are equipped with a number of measured indicators, therefore they are considered more versatile. They can be single-channel (for one indicator) and multi-channel (for several indicators).
  • desktop - installed in laboratories. In most cases, this rule works here: the larger the dimensions of the meter, the more accurate measurements you get as a result (measurement error is less). These devices have electrode holders and certain additional features.

Which pH meter is better to choose?

Can't decide? Ask the following questions to purchase the right appliance.

What is the purpose of a pH meter?

Acidity of what environment will you check - water, soil, food? In this case, the choice may fall on both universal equipment and specialized equipment.

What measurement range do you need?

The most common measurement range is 0 to 14 pH. But it is necessary to take into account the features of the analyzer and its purpose of application. Read more here: https://ventalab.ua/en/ph-metri/.

To what division will the accuracy be measured (±0.1, ±0.01, ±0.001)?

For basic analysis, ±0.1-0.2 is sufficient, but depending on the study, a more accurate instrument model may be required.

Is the PBX function built in?

The presence of the temperature compensation function simplifies the analysis process, eliminating the need to check the temperature of the samples. Given the limits of the temperature range specified by the manufacturer, it is easy to take measurements.

Mechanical or automatic calibration?

If you do not want to check the accuracy of the analyzer before each measurement, choose those that have automatic calibration. In this case, just take the calibration solution, lower the device, turn it on, press the button, wait for the result and you're done!

How many points to calibrate?

The number of points affects the accuracy of the results. Calibrate the device by one value, when measuring in one range, if more - then two, three, and so on.

Replaceable or built-in electrode?

Pay attention to pH analyzers that have a replaceable electrode if you plan to actively use the device.

What is the protection class of the device?

It is better to choose a device with a waterproof case, regardless of the conditions of use. For example, the IP67 rating is quite effective, allows you to use the pH meter underwater for a short period of time and prevents dust from accumulating inside the case.
