Severstal became one of the first participants in the Worldsteel global program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Press Releases

PAO Severstal has started an active phase of work under the Stepup program of the World Steel Association (Worldsteel), which aims to reduce its impact on the environment and climate. This project will enable the Cherepovets Iron and Steel Works (CherMK) to conduct a study using the Worldsteel benchmarking system and identify opportunities to reduce CO2 emissions. The association's program assumes work in four main areas: optimal selection and use of raw materials, energy efficiency, increased productivity and process reliability.

Worldsteel specialists visited the production site of CherMK on September 10-12, 2019. Association employees held a series of meetings with experts and Severstal management to determine areas of work to improve the efficiency of processes and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Interaction with Worldsteel experts allowed to agree on a methodology for estimating CO2 emissions, identify key drivers for reducing emissions and develop a program for further working with Worldsteel under the Step up program to achieve best industry practices.

Severstal has been participating in the Worldsteel benchmarking system for several years, providing data on greenhouse gas emissions, and currently CherMK ranks 16th in terms of specific greenhouse gas emissions. 64 companies with comparable production technology yielding 2.1 tCO2 /t molten steel (coverage areas 1-3). But the company plans to further significantly improve its positions in this area. At CherMK, an inventory of the main sources of CO2 has already been carried out, an emission map has been developed, and measurements of the carbon content in raw materials and slags have been carried out to clarify the coefficients of greenhouse gas emissions. It is important to remember that for business, climate change and the global community's efforts to counter it are not only risks, but opportunities. New commercial opportunities are emerging in Russia due to the growing demand for renewable energy, such as generated by wind turbines. And Severstal seeks to use these opportunities. The issue of climate change is supervised in the company at the level of the Board of Directors, "said Alexander Shevelev, CEO of Severstal.

Severstal is a member of Worldsteel, which unites 161 industry companies from 60 countries since 2001. The company actively supports the initiatives of the association, takes part in the work of the most important committees and in the implementation of joint projects.
